Southwestern Michigan India Association (SMIA)
The Southwestern Michigan India Association (SMIA) is a regional non-profit organization that aims to preserve India's rich cultural heritage. SMIA achieves this by engaging the Southwestern Michigan Indian community in various programs and activities that promote Indian festivals and traditions. It encourages the participation of talented community members in the various performing arts such as dance, music and drama. It keeps the community connected, facilitates communication and helps promote goodwill among it's members. SMIA also helps to build awareness about India, it's culture and philosophy among the younger generation of Indians growing up in Southwestern Michigan.
In addition to social activities, SMIA is also committed to giving back to the local community through it's charitable efforts. Over the past several years, SMIA has been actively engaged in funds-raising to support the education of deserving low-income children in Benton Harbor, Michigan and the purchase of much needed educational materials in Saint Joseph, Michigan schools. SMIA also participates in other local charitable causes such as food drives, etc.
SMIA's specific objectives as stated in it's by-laws are:
· To promote the culture and traditions of India;
· To inculcate the rich heritage of Indian culture in our children and youth by encouraging their participation in activities of this SMIA;
· To bring together the wealth of talent among SMIA members and to channel it to promote goodwill among local communities;
· To facilitate friendship among the Asian Indians and friends of the Associations of other nationalities, races and cultures and religions; and
